Day 6 – Elena and Nadiya

The world is forever changed. Almost overnight millions of Ukrainians have been displaced, leading to an outpouring of love and support from across the globe.

Mostly women, children, those with disabilities, and the elderly are on the move. With one piece of luggage, the Ukrainian refugees left their homes and their lives behind to seek safety.

We escorted Elena and her 90-year-old mom, Nadiya (both in the middle), who we affectionately call Mama, from Lviv to Warsaw.

We carried Mama in her wheelchair downstairs at the hotel (no elevators) to the taxi to travel to the train station for our early departure

Arrived at the Liviv Train Station

We brought her through the mass of people to the train …

… Where the local Polish support personnel helped her on board, wheelchair and all.

Many are exhausted from the arduous trip to safely.

Elena and mama are inseparable

Safely together on their way to Warsaw, they too needed some rest.

We joined the many refugees at the train station for a warm meal, before changing trains to Poland.

It was crowded everywhere.  With sub-zero temperatures, some ate in the warmth of the station.

Children find ways to keep occupied.

5 hour train to Warsaw from the Polish border. Mama,

14-Mama and Elena made it to Warsaw safely, where we checked them into a hotel to get some much-needed rest.
